ACTION AND MECHANISM Antidiarrheal. Intestinal adsorbent. It is micronized charcoal. It works by inactivating toxins and microorganisms in the digestive tract through a physical process of adsorption to the microparticles. SENIORS Adequate and well-controlled studies have not been conducted in geriatric patients. However, these patients are more susceptible to constipation. COMPOSITION Per capsule: adsorbent charcoal, 200 mg. PATIENT ADVICE - The capsules should be administered with water (avoid other drinks), at least half an hour after meals or at the onset of symptoms. - Do not administer food and/or medication simultaneously to avoid loss of absorption (leave at least 2 hours between doses). - Avoid prolonged use as it may interfere with the absorption of some nutrients. - If during treatment with activated charcoal there is a worsening or new abdominal pain, severe constipation or severe diarrhea, the clinical situation will need to be evaluated. - If symptoms worsen or persist after 2 days of treatment, or if the patient develops a high fever, the clinical situation should be evaluated. - It can cause black stools. CONTRAINDICATIONS - In the absence of bowel sounds, [INTESTINAL PERFORATION], [INTESTINAL OBSTRUCTION], recent digestive surgeries or risk of [GASTROINTESTINAL HEMORRHAGE]. PREGNANCY Systemic absorption of adsorbent charcoal is negligible, therefore it cannot reach the placenta. No toxicity has been observed in the fetus or pregnant woman. Use is approved. PHARMACOKINETICS Oral: Adsorbent charcoal is not absorbed or metabolized; it passes through the gastrointestinal tract and is eliminated in the feces. INDICATIONS - [DIARRHEA]: symptomatic treatment.-Symptom relief of [AEROPHAGIA]: [AEROPHAGIA], [FLATULENCE], [FLATULENCE]. INTERACTIONS This medication may reduce the absorption of orally administered drugs. Studies with acetylsalicylic acid, antidiabetic drugs (chlorpropamide, glibenclamide, glipizide, tolbutamide), antiepileptic drugs (carbamazepine, phenytoin, phenobarbital, valproic acid), dapsone, digoxin, phenylbutazone, furosemide, nizatidine, olanzapine, paracetamol, paroxetine, and theophylline have shown decreased absorption when doses of 8 g of activated charcoal or higher are used. Separate administration by at least 2 hours. LACTATION Systemic absorption of adsorbent charcoal is negligible, therefore it cannot be excreted in breast milk. Use is approved. CHILDREN Not recommended for use in children under 3 years of age. GUIDELINES FOR PROPER ADMINISTRATION The capsules should be swallowed with water (do not use other drinks), at least half an hour after finishing meals or at the onset of symptoms. POSOLOGY - Adults and children over 12 years (oral): * As an antidiarrheal: 2-3 capsules each time symptoms appear. * As an antiflatulent: 2-3 capsules at least half an hour after finishing meals or at the onset of symptoms. - Children under 12 years: Acceptable only for the treatment of drug overdose as a selective decontaminant of the digestive tract. Its use is not recommended as it may interfere with the absorption of some nutrients. - Elderly: This medication should be administered with caution to the elderly, as they are more susceptible to constipation. - If symptoms worsen or persist after 2 days of treatment, or if the patient develops a high fever, the clinical situation should be evaluated. PRECAUTIONS - Do not use for more than 2 days or with high [FEVER]. ADVERSE REACTIONS The adverse effects of activated charcoal are generally mild and transient. In most cases, adverse reactions are an extension of the pharmacological action and primarily affect the digestive system. The most characteristic adverse reactions are: -Occasionally (1-9%): nausea, vomiting (due to very rapid administration of large quantities), constipation. It may cause blackening of the stool.
