Since its publication in 1818, the revolutionary novel „Frankenstein“ by Mary Shelley has inspired countless film adaptations, along with some exceptional film musical works. „Frankenstein“ by Guillermo del Toro is the latest adaptation, and the music by Alexandre Desplat is the perfect complement to it. In their third collaboration, following „The Shape of Water“ from 2017 and „Pinocchio“ from 2022, the two have created an exciting blend of beautiful lyricism and deep emotions, conveying the wonder and tragedy of Shelley’s classic tale. Desplat’s music instantly recreates the world of del Toro and Mary Shelley right from the introduction, which presents the ghostly beautiful seven-note motif for the true antagonist – Victor Frankenstein. This is accompanied by eerie female choir voices and low-frequency electronic pulsation, creating a sense of the story’s inherent gothic essence and themes of life and death, with the pulsation serving as a symbol of the power Victor will use to create his creature. Eldbjørg Hemsing, on solo violin, presents a range of magnificent tones that move from the beauty of nature to the beauty of melancholy. At the same time, Desplat composes music for Victor’s creation that is surprisingly charming yet powerful, with an almost euphoric waltz accompanying the construction of Victor’s sinister experiment. „Frankenstein“ concludes with a magnificent reprise of its themes – a demonstration of the talent of Alexandre Desplat and the inspiration of Guillermo del Toro and Mary Shelley.
