According to the German Nutrition Society (DGE), even a normal diet leads to an acid surplus of approximately 50-80 mmol/day. Excessive protein intake, physical and mental stress, lack of exercise, and the depletion of alkaline nutrients in our food due to various environmental problems are further reasons for an excessive intake of acids in our bodies. Our body constantly strives to counteract excess acids with its own buffer systems (substances that bind and neutralize acids) in order to maintain a constant acid-base balance. The bodys main buffer is sodium bicarbonate, a basic mineral compound, which is why we have consciously and specifically included it in our Urbase® alkaline powders (except Urbase® II Intense) alongside other important basic mineral compounds. If its natural buffer systems are overloaded, the body may be forced to compensate by drawing on its largest alkaline mineral reserves (skeletal bones, teeth, and scalp) to buffer the excess acids. Over decades, this can lead to the demineralization of bone tissue.
