An enema is used to introduce fluids into the intestines, stimulating peristalsis and thereby emptying the bowel. The enema fluid is administered via an enema bag (container or collapsible bag) that is suspended at a height relative to the patient and therefore has a correspondingly long tube. The elevated position of the enema bag creates a gradient and thus hydrodynamic pressure, allowing the fluid to flow into the rectum. Many patients are unable to perform the procedure themselves and therefore require assistance. Büttner-Frank irrigators consist of a plastic container with a hose connection, a connecting hose, and a valve with a cannula. An enema nozzle or a so-called mother tube for vaginal douching can be attached to the valve.
