nAs early as the fourth century AD Christian writers referred to then nbooks of Job, Psalms, Proverbs, Ecclesiastes, and the Song ofn nSolomon as the poetic books. Perhaps more controversy swirlsn nabout these five books than any other division of the Old Testament.n nThe canonicity of three of these books was questioned in ancientn ntimes. The interpretation of Ecclesiastes and Song of Solomon aren nnotoriously difficult. Even among conservative scholars there is non nunanimity regarding the date of Ecclesiastes and Job. The archaicn npoetry of some passages in these books make them virtually impossiblen nto decipher at points.n nIn spite of these difficulties, the careful study of the poetic books isn nmost rewarding. Job depicts faith under trial. Here the believer isn nassured that his suffering is not necessarily the result of grievous sinn non his part, and that an all-wise and all-powerful God ultimately is inn ncharge of the universe. In Psalms the believer can learn to express hisn nfaith in the various circumstances of life. This book is also full of directn nmessianic prophecies from the pen of the prophet David. Proverbsn nprovides a collection of wise observations to guide the believer in hisn ndaily walk. Ecclesiastes stresses that faith is the key to meaning in thisn nlife, and that the enjoyment of life is a duty. The Song of Solomonn nplaces the divine seal of approval upon the human emotion of loven nand physical attraction. Lessons are taught in these books which helpn nto place in proper perspective the message of the rest of the sacredn nword.n nThis present volume completes the Old Testament Survey Series.n
