Kalakaua, David: - nDavid Kalākaua (1836-1891), also known as The Merrie Monarch, was the king of Hawaii from 1874 to his death. Born into a noble family, he was educated at the Chiefs Childrens School. He later studied law under Charles Coffin Harris, Chief Justice of the Supreme Court of Hawaii. Kalākaua held multiple military positions including Knight Companion of the Royal Order. Following the death of King Kamehameha V, Kalākaua was elected his successor against Queen Emma. Throughout his reign, he was known for his lively social events and was a proponent of the Hawaiian Renaissance, a resurgence of the islands culture.n
