The idea behind the product: We developed The Converter® because many people with thyroid issues talk about a so-called conversion disorder. This refers to a reduced conversion of T4 (thyroxine) into the more active T3 (triiodothyronine). This conversion occurs primarily outside the thyroid gland in various organs and tissues and is controlled by deiodinases (enzymes). What does that mean in practice? If less T4 is converted to T3, this can lead to less metabolically active T3 being available – although T4 levels are not necessarily bad. The regulation is complex: Depending on the situation, the body can also produce more rT3 (a less metabolically active form). Why does selenium even play a role in this? Certain deiodinases are selenium-dependent enzymes – in case of selenium deficiency, the activity of these enzymes may be impaired.
