Synvisc / Synvisc-One injection for joint treatment Synvisc and Synvisc-One are sterile, elastoviscous injection solutions administered directly into the joint, where they temporarily replace or supplement the natural synovial fluid. They are intended for intra-articular use by a physician only and are used to treat joint pain associated with degenerative joint diseases. As the product is for single use only, each dose is supplied in an individually sterile, pre-filled syringe. Application and implementation The injection is administered directly into the joint space and must only be performed by a physician. A suitable needle gauge (usually 18–22 gauge) is used, the length of which is adjusted to the joint being treated. Before the injection, any excess joint fluid is removed, and then the entire contents of the syringe are injected into the joint. The procedure is performed under strict aseptic conditions; for joints that are difficult to access, such as the hip or shoulder, imaging guidance (e.g., fluoroscopy) may be used. The syringe is for single use only and must not be reused or resterilized. Important information before treatment Synvisc and Synvisc-One are for intra-articular injection only and must never be injected into a blood vessel or surrounding tissue. The product must not be used if the packaging is open or damaged. It is recommended to avoid strenuous physical activity involving the treated joint for a few days after the injection and to follow the recommendations of your healthcare provider when resuming activity. Synvisc/Synvisc-One has not been studied in pregnant or breastfeeding women, or in children and adolescents under 18 years of age. Contraindications and warnings The injection must not be administered into a joint if there is pronounced inflammation, infection, or a significant joint effusion. Use is also contraindicated in cases of skin diseases or infections at the injection site, as well as in cases of venous or lymphatic congestion in the affected extremity. Synvisc/Synvisc-One must not be used in cases of known hypersensitivity to hyaluronan (sodium hyaluronate) or allergy to components of avian origin, as the product contains small amounts of avian protein. Disinfectants containing quaternary ammonium salts must not be used during skin disinfection, as precipitation may occur. Possible side effects After the injection, temporary pain, swelling, or effusion may occur in the treated joint. In rare cases, acute inflammatory reactions with severe swelling, a feeling of warmth, and joint stiffness have been described; these usually subside within a few days. Very rarely, allergic reactions, including severe hypersensitivity reactions such as anaphylaxis or angioedema, have been reported. Systemic symptoms such as skin rash, itching, fever, headache, or malaise are rare but should be taken seriously and investigated by a doctor.
