When she was fourteen years old, her mother moved them to Beaufort, South Carolina, where a better life awaited them. She attended three years at Robert Smalls High School. Following her mothers death, she moved to Boston, Massachusetts, where she graduated from Dorchester High School. She was educated at Kennesaw State University and graduated in 2011 at the age of sixty-three with a bachelors degree in social work. When not writing, she enjoys playing her guitar, painting, gardening, and fishing.
