Human luteinizing hormone (LH), which is normally present in small amounts in urine, plays an important role in regulating ovulation and ovarian function during the menstrual cycle. Approximately 24-36 hours before the release of the mature egg from the follicle, the LH concentration rises sharply (LH surge) and reaches its highest value in the middle of the cycle. The LH ovulation test detects this LH surge and can roughly predict the likely time of ovulation for the next 24-48 hours.
