The use of polychlorinated biphenyls (PCBs) has been banned in Germany since 1989 because they can cause a wide range of health problems. In buildings constructed before 1989, PCBs are found particularly in: additives to joint sealants (plasticizers), corrosion protection coatings, hydraulic oils/lubricants, carrier fluids for insecticides, and paints. The sample must be taken and sent to the supplier within one year of the customer receiving the sampling kit or return material; after this period, the suppliers obligation to provide the sample ceases. This period may be shorter depending on the shelf life of the components of the sampling kit if a shorter period is indicated for the respective product in the online shop at the time of ordering; this shorter period then takes precedence over the one-year period stated in the first sentence.
