Otovent nasal balloon – supports pressure equalization in the middle ear Otovent is a medical nasal balloon system for treating negative pressure in the middle ear, which can manifest as a blocked ear, impaired hearing, pain, a feeling of heaviness, or dizziness. The special autoinflation technique opens the Eustachian tube, ventilates the middle ear, and allows accumulated fluid to drain. This effectively alleviates the symptoms of a condition known as middle ear effusion (secretory otitis, glue ear). Who is this product suitable for? Otovent can be used by adults and children aged 3 years and older. Use in children must always be supervised by an adult. The product is intended for single-patient use (single-patient use with multiple applications). Function and application Otovent consists of a latex balloon and a polypropylene nasal piece, which are connected before use. Inflating the balloon through one nostril briefly increases the pressure in the nose, allowing the Eustachian tube to open and equalizing the pressure in the middle ear. For the treatment of middle ear effusion, Otovent should be used at least three times a day (morning, noon, and evening) with one inflation in each nostril during the first week, and then at least twice a day (morning and evening). The maximum clinical effect may only be achieved after several weeks to months of regular use; after 2–3 weeks, a doctor should assess whether treatment should be continued. Use for pressure discomfort after flying or diving Otovent can be used flexibly to relieve discomfort after flights, dives, or hyperbaric chamber treatments. When flying, it is recommended to use the system 3–4 times starting from the beginning of the landing approach. If symptoms persist after landing, use can be continued. Otovent can also be used multiple times before or after diving, as well as during or after hyperbaric treatment, to relieve symptoms. Important warnings and precautions Otovent should not be used during an acute middle ear infection or an upper respiratory tract infection. The balloons are made of natural rubber latex and can trigger allergic reactions; if you have a known latex allergy, consult your doctor before use. If symptoms such as skin rash, itching, difficulty breathing, or swelling occur, stop use immediately and consult a doctor. The product contains small parts and poses a potential choking hazard – please keep out of reach of children and allow children to use it only under supervision. In cases of frequent, minor nosebleeds, any manipulation of the nose (e.g., blowing your nose, inflating the balloon) can trigger a nosebleed, which is usually harmless. Some users initially find the pressure equalization in the ear uncomfortable; this sensation usually diminishes with subsequent uses, indicating that the process is working. If you suspect a perforated eardrum, experience severe headaches, severe dizziness, sensitivity to light, or nausea in connection with the use of the product, stop treatment immediately and contact a doctor. Instructions for use and care The nasal applicator should be clean before each use. Place the balloon onto the flat end of the applicator, hold the bulbous end close to one nostril, and close the other nostril with your finger. After inhaling deeply through your mouth, close your mouth and inflate the balloon through the open nostril until it reaches approximately the size of a grapefruit. Then, swallow a few times. Repeat the process on the other side. After use, clean the nasal applicator with a mild detergent and rinse with clean water. Dispose of the balloon after 20 uses.
