Orthovisc is a sterile, pyrogen-free solution of sodium hyaluronate for intra-articular injection as a sterile 15 mg/ml injection for non-surgical procedures. Orthovisc contains sodium hyaluronate (hyaluronic acid) in physiological saline solution. Sodium hyaluronate is a high molecular weight polysaccharide composed of sodium glucuronate and N-acetylglucosamine. Orthovisc pre-filled injection has lubricating properties and reduces the mechanical load on the joint. It is used in people with symptoms of synovial joint dysfunction, such as osteoarthritis, a degenerative joint disease (arthrosis) characterized by degeneration of joint cartilage, leading to painful symptoms and limited joint function. The sodium hyaluronate preparation is biocompatible, non-antigenic and does not interfere with the normal healing process.
