Unlike spirulina and AFA algae, chlorella algae have a cell nucleus, making them microalgae. Spirulina and AFA, on the other hand, are merely bacteria (so-called cyanobacteria), although they are often referred to as microalgae. Despite being minuscule, chlorella algae are highly evolved organisms and have managed to survive for more than two million years despite all changes in their environment. This is likely the reason why scientists are so interested in this type of algae, and numerous scientific studies on its health effects now exist.
