Herbal tinctures are made by steeping a plant in an alcoholic solution (usually pure alcohol) for a period of 4-6 weeks. For colds and fever, elderberry is combined with mint, yarrow, or hyssop, and for flu, it is combined with agrimony. For rhinitis, it can be combined with water lily. Tinctures retain all the active ingredients of the plant, are extremely easy to administer and completely natural. They have an advantage over dietary supplements in pill form, as they do not contain chemicals and preservatives and are absorbed much more efficiently by the body. The usual dose is 1ml (approximately 20 drops per day). They should not be consumed during pregnancy and breastfeeding.
