Vitamin B2 is also known as riboflavin and like all B vitamins it is water-soluble. It is not produced by our body and for this reason it must be obtained through the diet with rich sources of riboflavin such as milk, cheese, beef, eggs and whole grains. However, 22% of women and 12% of men, receive amounts lower than the recommended intake with worsening riboflavin deficiency, which can manifest clinically with angular cheilitis, as well as tearing, burning sensation and itching in the eyes. Riboflavin participates in the production of energy from the burning of proteins, fats and carbohydrates and contributes to the restoration of the continuity of mucous membranes and the production of red blood cells as well as the production of thyroid hormones and the production of immune system cells depend on the presence of riboflavin. Finally, riboflavin actively participates in the processes of the body that produce some of the antioxidant compounds that protect cells from the harmful effects of free radicals, for this reason riboflavin is considered important for maintaining eye health.
