Thiamine, also known as Vitamin B1, is the first B-complex vitamin to be discovered. It is not produced by our body and for this reason must be obtained through diet, such as whole grains, legumes, nuts and seeds, while because it is a water-soluble vitamin, it is not stored in the body, resulting in deficiency, either when someones diet is very poor in it, or due to reduced appetite, or due to a diet rich in industrially processed foods. Mild thiamine deficiency in the body can occur in the elderly for the reasons mentioned above, although thiamine is added to white flour to avoid deficiency but thiamine levels can also be depleted due to long-term treatment with diuretics which is often recommended for patients undergoing treatment for alcoholism. One of the most important organic roles of thiamine is the release of energy from carbohydrates, while it plays an important role in maintaining the integrity of the nervous system, as it is a vital micronutrient for the production of the neurotransmitter acetylcholine. In the form of co-enzyme Thiamin Pyrophosphate, it is essential for many metabolic reactions as well as for the removal of Carbon Dioxide and the decarboxylation of Alpha-Keto acids. Thiamine acts synergistically with other B vitamins, specifically Riboflavin (Vitamin B2) and Niacin (Vitamin B3). This particular dietary supplement is therefore suitable for people who consume high amounts of alcohol, heavy smokers, those who are physically strained at work and for young people who are in the growth stage.
