Glutamine is particularly important for normal intestinal function because intestinal mucosal cells regenerate using glutamine as a primary energy source and is therefore often referred to by doctors as a gut restorer. Glutamine is mainly recommended in cases of disruption of the integrity of the intestinal wall (such as in conditions of intestinal flora imbalance or in certain chronic diseases accompanied by disturbances of normal intestinal function) and is often used for recovery by athletes, as large quantities of glutamine are stored in the muscles where it plays an important role in the repair and construction of new muscle tissue as intense training can deplete glutamine stores, which is why a supplement can accelerate their restoration.
