Bromelain is an enzyme derived from the stem of fresh pineapple and is widely known as a digestive enzyme. It helps in the digestion of fatty and high-protein meals. Recent research, however, has focused the scientific communitys interest in the use of Bromelain as a dietary supplement for the treatment of sports injuries (especially sprains). Bromelains mechanism of action is proposed to be the modification of the inflammatory response, through both the inhibition of the production of prostaglandins that promote inflammation, and through the facilitation of the production of prostaglandins with anti-inflammatory properties. To enhance its action, it can be co-administered with curcumin (turmeric), which is why many doctors recommend taking both preparations simultaneously. Bromelain appears to aid in the absorption of curcumin, which is the active ingredient in Turmeric. To ensure the effectiveness of the product, specific levels of enzyme activity are required, amounting to 2000 GDU (gelatin-dissolving units) per gram. For this reason, products that ensure the above-listed levels of enzyme activity, such as Lamberts Bromelain, should be used.
