The vaginal pH can shift, however, if the number of lactobacilli in the vagina decreases. A low number of lactobacilli and reduced acidity allow other vaginal bacteria to proliferate excessively. This leads to an imbalance in the vaginal flora, known as bacterial vaginosis. The reduced acidity doesnt cause inflammation of the mucous membrane, but rather an abnormal, milky vaginal discharge with an unpleasant odor. Many women with low-acid bacterial vaginosis, however, experience no symptoms.
