Chlorhexidine is a biguanide compound with antiseptic activity. Its action is both bactericidal and bacteriostatic. It has a broad antibacterial spectrum, being active against Gram-positive and Gram-negative bacteria, such as Serratia marcescens, Streptococcus uberis, Staphylococcus aureus, and Escherichia coli. Some Gram-negative bacteria are relatively resistant. It does not have sporicidal action. Indications: Antiseptic for ulcers and wounds in general, limb conditions, antiseptic for chafing and minor burns, antiseptic for the surgical field and the veterinarians hands, disinfection of puncture sites, and cleaning and disinfection of the ear canal. Side effects: Occasionally, it may cause photosensitivity reactions. Repeated use over a long period may, in some cases, produce dermatitis. Route of administration: Topical. Dosage: Due to the good tolerance of the preparation, it can be applied topically as often as necessary.
