It has white to pinkish, umbel-like flower clusters and pinnate leaves. It flowers from June to August. Its botanical name is Valeriana officinalis. The valerian root, also known as Valerianae radix, is primarily used. This is dug up and then gently dried, which is how it develops its characteristic scent.
