Pharmacopoeia-grade lactose Pharmaceutical-grade lactose is a white to almost white, odorless powder with a slightly sweet taste. It is ideal for subtly sweetening beverages and foods such as yogurt or muesli, although it has a lower sweetening power than regular table sugar. Lactose has contributed to overall well-being for generations. Features and characteristics After ingestion, lactose is partially broken down in the small intestine by the bodys own enzyme lactase into its building blocks, glucose and galactose. This process is relatively slow, so some of the lactose reaches the large intestine. There, specific bacteria break down the lactose, stimulating their own growth and creating an acidic environment. The resulting breakdown products trigger the bodys own processes, which can further stimulate natural bowel movements. Therefore, lactose can, based on experience, have a mild laxative effect. Application and consumption recommendation Lactose is stirred into drinks or used to sweeten food, just like regular sugar. Children from 1 year of age receive 1–2 teaspoons (equivalent to 5–10 g) spread throughout the day. Adolescents and adults take 4 tablespoons (equivalent to 40 g). The recommended daily intake should be spread out over the day.
